Upward-facing dog in yoga is an excellent pose with numerous benefits including stretching the chest and wrist muscles, activating the abdominals, building the back muscles, and lengthening the spine.
Tips to keep in mind when performing Upward-Facing Dog:
- Avoid “turtle neck,” or bringing the shoulders to the ears. Keep the neck long by pushing the palms into the ground, lifting the upper torso, and bringing the shoulders down away from the ears.
- Press the front of the feet into the ground as you drop the pelvis to the floor. Keep the thighs on the ground or lift them up for an extra challenge.
- Lift the chin off the chest, gazing up at the sky.
