What is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a microalgae that has been consumed for centuries due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. Regarded as a “superfood,” the deep green algae grows naturally in oceans and salty lakes in subtropical climates.
Super is the perfect word to describe spirulina. It contains significant amounts of calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron. It’s also brimming with essential amino acids and protein, makes up about 60 to 70 percent of spirulina’s dry weight.

Benefits of Spirulina

Spirulina is touted as a healing supplement that combats a variety of ailments including heart health issues, weight loss, diabetes and high cholesterol, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Spirulina is also believed to combat various mental and emotional disorders, including anxiety, stress, depression and ADHD.

How to Use Spirulina

Spirulina comes in a variety of forms including powder, pills and combined in drinks.
Spirulina has a strong, “fishy” taste. Remember, it grows naturally in oceans and salty lakes. Add spirulina powder to smoothies.
