If you’ve browsed the soft drink aisle at your favorite health food store lately, you’ve probably seen or even purchased a functional drink. These beverages, usually marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar-laden soda, claim to not only hydrate but improve health through ingredients like prebiotics, adaptogens and more. Popular brands of functional drinks include Poppi, Olipop and Kin Euphorics.
What are Probiotics and Prebiotics?
Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain live microorganisms to maintain or improve the “good” bacteria in the digestive system. Prebiotics are foods (typically high-fiber foods) that act as food for probiotics, enabling them to do their job in keeping gut health in balance. A well-balanced gut can work wonders on overall health, improving immunity, eliminating fatigue, skin problems, food allergies, even depression.

Do Functional Drinks Work?
Although these products are fairly new to the market, health professionals agree that functional drinks could be a great alternative to regular soda. However, keep in mind that all are not created the same. For example, Poppi brand is currently in litigation over its claim to be a “healthy soda.” As always, be sure to read the label of the product you intend to buy.
