According to a new study by Nature Communications, sleeping less than six hours a night in midlife can increase the risk of dementia by 30%. This loss of cognitive functioning, like thinking, remembering and reasoning shows just how the quantity of sleep matters.
So how much sleep should you get? It varies depending on age.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, elementary school children should get between nine and 12 hours of sleep per night.
Teenagers should get eight to 10 hours of sleep per night and adults ages 18 and over should get a minimum of seven hours of sleep per night.
