7 Habits That Can Sabotage Your Mental Health
At the beginning of every new year, people make a list of things to commit to in order to become their best selves. Whether it’s building a better body or setting goals to get that promotion or start a business, achieving those things requires making small tasks into habits. Consistency is key.
Tending to your mental health takes commitment and doing away with bad habits that eat away at your well-being. Here are six habits that can sabotage your mental wellness.
- Not taking time for yourself. Self-care is self-preservation. Take time to relax and recharge for yourself and your loved ones.
- Overdosing on social media. Too much screen time has been found to be harmful to your mental health. Filling your mind with negative content that triggers anxiety or feelings of inadequacy are not good.
- Not getting adequate sleep. One of the most important keys to good mental health is getting enough sleep. At least 8 hours of rest during the night is ideal. If you get less than 8 hours, consider catching a quick nap during the day.
- Lack of movement or exercise. Increasing blood flow to the brain through movement is positive for mental wellness.
- Harboring negative thoughts. Thoughts become things so make a concerted effort to change negative thoughts into positive ones.
- Participating in toxic relationships. Whether it’s family, friends or significant others, it’s important that these relationships are positive and nurturing to your mental well-being.
- Eating unhealthily. Studies show there is a direct connection between what you eat and drink and your brain health. Choose foods that nourish the brain and create a healthy gut environment.
