Yoga Foundations: Backbends
As we age, having mobility in the spine is vital to your health. The spine provides core structural support, protects your central nervous system and enables everyday movement. One of the best ways to take care of your spine is through a regular yoga practice. Backbends offer many benefits for spinal health:
Improves Spinal Mobility: Bending backward stretches and flexes the spine, keeping joints supple and preventing stiffness from long hours of sitting.
Strengthens the Back Body: These postures engage your glutes, hamstrings, core, and upper back muscles, which help support an upright posture.
Opens the Chest and Shoulders: Backbends stretch the front of your body, relieving tight shoulders from typing or looking at screens.
Enhances Breathing: Expanding your ribcage and chest opens the diaphragm, allowing for deeper and fuller breaths.
Here are a few of our favorite yoga poses to improve flexibility in the spine.
