Baking At Home? Try These 4 Egg Substitutes
Until recently, eggs were an absolute necessity when baking traditional dishes and desserts. More people are embracing healthier lifestyles and cutting out dairy from their diets. Tossing eggs can leave vegan dessert lovers thinking their only option for an after-dinner treat is a bowl of fruit. But recently, health-conscious bakers have taken the guess work out of vegan baking and discovered several alternatives to eggs. Give these four a try.
- Egg Replacer: This powdered egg substitute is perfect for baking desserts, muffins and breads. Mix 2 tablespoons of warm water with 1 ½ teaspoons of egg replacer then mix into your recipe. It gives your dessert the “fluff” of egg without the egg and aftertaste.
- Applesauce: Use a quarter cup of unsweetened applesauce in place of one egg in most baking recipes to give your dish a moist, rich texture.
- Bananas: To replace eggs in chewy desserts like brownies, use one ripe mashed banana for each egg in your recipe.
- Ground Flax Seeds: To replace eggs in any baked dish, mix one tablespoon ground flaxseed meal with three tablespoons of water. You can buy flax seeds already ground from your local health food store or you can grind whole flax seeds yourself using a coffee grinder.
