5 Ways to Improve Cognitive Health
Just like the muscles in our bodies, cognitive abilities can decline if the brain is not nurtured or stimulated enough. Aging and heredity can be a factor in cognitive deterioration, but for many, there are things that you can do now to improve brain health.
- Stay physically active. A 2006 study found that cardiovascular fitness, especially in older adults, is associated with increased brain volume in the areas of the brain linked to age-related decline. Begin a regular daily movement routine or practice yoga.
- Eat for brain health. Incorporate brain-boosting foods like blueberries, EFAs, and colorful veggies into your diet.
- Get good sleep. Set a goal of getting 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Be willing to take a nap during the day if you do not get adequate sleep at night.
- Adopt a growth mindset. Be open to trying new things and having new experiences through travel, learning a new hobby or skill.
- Keep stress at bay. Stress can wreak havoc on the brain. Find ways to manage stress or avoid it altogether.
