If you’ve never tried tofu, this may be a good recipe to begin. It’s full of flavor, easy to make, and nutritious.

Here are just some of the benefits of the ingredients in this recipe:

Garlic: known to boost the immune system, improve high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and may help the prevention of certain cancers
Vegan butter: a great, dairy-free alternative to traditional butter
Chili peppers: contain vitamins A, B, and E and capsaicin, an antioxidant that protects the cells and helps reduce inflammation

Ingredients:

  • 2 packages of extra firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 tablespoons raw sugar
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce (a healthier alternative would be Bragg’s Liquid Aminos)
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1-2 tablespoons water (optional, to thin out sauce to desired thickness)
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Directions:

Heat a saucepan over medium heat. Melt butter then add garlic. Saute for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the remaining ingredients to the saucepan and stir until combined. Cook for 5 minutes then turn off heat and set aside.

For the tofu:

Drain water out of tofu blocks in a double layer of paper towels. Cut into 1/2 inch cubes, then season with garlic powder and sea salt.

In a heavy skillet, heat oil. Add tofu chunks in a single layer and cook until crispy and brown. Cook on the other side, then drain tofu on paper towels.

Add cooked tofu to sauce. Serve with rice and broccoli. Enjoy!
