Our culture has taken food for granted. For the last several decades, we’ve concentrated on making food quick and convenient, sacrificing our health and wellness for processed products that can be eaten on the go or in front of the computers, allowing us to multitask.

The good news is we’ve begun making our way back to simple, wholesome food. Now is the best time to rediscover good, nurturing food.

Try these simple eating guidelines that can change your life for good.

Drink warm water with a splash of fresh squeezed lemon upon rising to hydrate the body and activate the digestive juices.

Rotate what you eat. Too much of any one thing can sometimes lead to food allergies or intolerances. So switch it up.

Eat the rainbow. Give your eyes a treat by building a beautiful, colorful plate. A vibrant-looking plate can actually activate your salivary glands, leading to better digestion.

Chew slowly and mindfully. Savor the flavors of your food. Chew your food thoroughly so it can pass through your digestive system easily. Read more here on mindful eating.

Don’t drink fluids while you eat. Doing so can dilute your digestive acids, leading to partial digestion. Drink fluids 30 minutes before or after eating.

Eat your prebiotics. Whole grains, fiber and these types of foods are excellent for feeding probiotics. Read more about these digestion powerhouses here.

Eat light at night. Eating too late can wreak havoc on your digestion and your sleep patterns. Don’t go to sleep on a full stomach. Allow at least 2 hours for digestion before hitting the sack.
